Windbender Spring Loaded Locating Pin Installation Instructions

This job is best done with a drill press and your female adjustment rails removed from the bike, but if you are feeling brave it may be possible to use a hand held drill motor without removing the rails.

  1. Remove the female adjustment rails from your Windbender Base. The snap caps will come off with a small flat screwdriver and a #2 Phillips screwdriver will remove the screws.
  2. Mark the center of the rail width on the back of the rail (flat side) directly over the existing locating pin through hole. Center-punch your mark and drill an 1/8” hole at your mark, square to the rail surface. Open the hole to 3/8” and tap the hole with a tapered 12mm x 1.75p tap.
  3. Thread the hollow bolt into the newly tapped hole and snug it down with an 8mm hex wrench.
  4. Slip the spring over the collared pin and insert the pin and spring into the open end of the hollow bolt, threaded end first, while aligning the pin stop collar in the bolt slot.
  5. Hold the pin and spring through the hollow bolt and thread the knurled nut onto the 3mm threads on the protruding end of the pin. You may put a small amount of thread-lock compound on the threads to secure the nut. DO NOT let thread-lock get on any plastic parts! Let the pin slide down into the bolt until the collar is engaged with the slot in the hollow bolt and hand-tighten the nut.
  6. Reinstall the adjustment rails on your base shield being careful not to over-tighten the mounting screws.

To use your new spring loaded pins: Pull out on the knurled nut and turn clockwise (to keep from loosening the nut) 1/2 turn. The pin will release in the open position. Set your top-shield height and turn each pin another 1/2 turn to engage. If you missed aligning the slot in the male rail exactly, you can simply push or pull the top shield up or down until the pins engage the slots in the male rails.
